From iconic movies to TV shows, we’ve narrowed down 18 of our favourites on Netflix New Zealand to provide you with some well needed laugh-out-loud entertainment.

1. Superbad

This 2007 comedy blockbuster never gets old. It follows three nerdy best friends, while they navigate their last few weeks of high school. When they are invited to a huge party, they go on a mission to try and secure alcohol, to impress girls, and get some sex before college. Unfortunately, they end up in serious ropes of trouble. The hilarious dialogue, McLovin’s epic one-liners, and memorable characters will have you rolling off the couch with laughter.

2. White Chicks

Another blast from the past, this 2004 comedy movie will have you in stiches no matter how many times you’ve seen it. It tells the tale of two FBI agents, Kevin (Shawn Wayans) and Marcus (Marlon Wayans), who land in hot water at work. After upsetting two socialites they are escorting to the Hamptons, the girls refuse to go, so the FBI agents are forced to pose as the sisters. Totally worth the watch!

3. Ted 1 & 2

This entertaining masterpiece tells the story of a teddy bear who comes to life after his owner, John, wished that he could talk as a child. However, in adulthood, Ted clings to John, and is not prepared when John’s girlfriend wants Ted to move out. This leads the way for the story to follow over two movies. Additionally, Ted’s comical New York accent, foul mouth and one-liners are enough to make you giggle.

4. We’re The Millers

A 2013 crime comedy movie that was adored by people across the globe. It follows a drug dealer called David, who is forced to smuggle drugs from Mexico. He hatches a plan which involves hiring a stripper, a thief and his nerdy teenage neighbour to pose as his fake family to help him struggle the drugs into the states. With a stellar cast, from Jennifer Aniston, to Emma Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, and more…you won’t be disappointed.

5. Friends

Still, 17 years later, this comedy show never fails to make us laugh repeatedly at the same jokes. Let Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Ross and Chandler provide you with some LOLs this lockdown as they navigate life experiences, from love to marriage to plenty of divorces, cough cough Ross, to heartbreaks and all sorts of craziness. Indeed, one of the greatest comedies on Netflix.

6. Shrek 1 & 2

These animation comedy movies are the perfect watch with family. In Shrek 1, it follows a reclusive ogre who embarks on a journey with a hilarious donkey to get fairytale creatures off his land. However, if he wants the creatures to leave, he must rescue Princess Fiona as part of a quest from an arrogant lord. Certainly, a fantastic comedy movie to watch this weekend.

7. How To Be Single

This movie is relatable to anyone that’s ever been single, practically the whole planet. It follows Alice (Dakota Johnson), who just split from her long-term boyfriend, and learns how to be single with her comical and wild co-worker Robin (Rebel Wilson). Robin loves a good party and a one-night stand and tries to get Alice to embrace this sort of lifestyle. This hilarious movie is the girly indulgence you need this weekend.

8. Vivo

You don’t need to be a kid to watch this 2021 Netflix Original animation flick which is being absorbed by households around the globe right now. With fantastic all-new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it tells the tale of a music-obsessed Kinkajou (voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda), who embarks on an unforgettable, musical journey to deliver a love song to Marta, for his owner Andres. Indeed, one of the greatest Netflix comedies to escape the lockdown blues.

9. Ginny & Georgia

This treasured Netflix series follows an awkward 15-year-old Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry) and her 30-year-old free-spirited mother, Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey) as they settle down in New England after years on the run. Though, Georgia’s past threatens any sort of possibility of a normal life. Amongst the emotion and drama, you can expect to get plenty of bellyaches filled with laughter.


10. Pitch Perfect 1, 2 & 3

Let the iconic Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, and more famous faces, brighten up your day with this musical comedy trilogy. It follows a group of diverse girls, from mean chicks to odd girls, who would never be friends, only that they have found common ground while singing together. Their group enters top music competitions, and this leads the way for the story to unfold over three hilarious movies.

11. Pineapple Express

This 2008 classic features Seth Rogers, James Franco and lots more iconic stars. It tells the story of a perpetually stoned process server and his kindhearted dealer when they witness a murder and they must go on the run from a drug lord who wants to kill them. Definitely, a must-watch to boost your mood.

12. Yes Day

This charming family movie stars Jennifer Garner as mother Allison, along with her husband Carlos, who agree to take part in a ”Yes Day” to please their children. Therefore, for 24 hours they must say yes to everything the kids want to do. This sets the chaotic scenes ahead. Indeed, a flick filled with laughter, fun and warmth that everyone in the clan can enjoy.

13. Sex Education

This sex comedy drama series is, arguably, the funniest show you will ever watch. Catch up on season one, two and three now which follows a teenage boy, Otis (Asa Butterfield) with an embarrassing sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson). Otis, with help from a classmate, secretly and mistakenly sets up a sex therapy clinic at school in exchange for money.

14. Bad Trip

This American comedy film follows two best friends on a wild road trip to New York, as a hidden camera captures them pulling hilarious pranks on the general public. Indeed, it’s the escape movie you need to watch this weekend, and we bet you’ll be rolling off the couch laughing.

15. Resort To Love

This new romantic comedy is produced by Grammy winner, Alicia Keys, so you know it’s got to be a good one. It tells the story of a struggling singer, Erica (Christina Milian) who lands a gig at her ex-finance’s wedding in a lush island resort in Mauritius. There, she battles with keeping her past relationship a secret from his bride-to-be while also realising that she still has feelings for him.

16. Lady Bird

A laugh-out-loud coming of age comedy movie starring Saoirse Ronan, Beanie Feldstein, Timothee Chalamet, and more. It tells the tale of a stubborn, strongly opinionated and quirky teenager, who has a turbulent bond with her hardworking nurse mom as she tries to discover who she is in the world. Certainly, the heartwarming flick you need to escape the lockdown news.

17. Set It Up

This relatable and funny romantic American comedy stars Zoey Deutch and Glenn Powell. It follows the pair as overworked and underpaid assistants in New York, who team up to try and get their bosses to fall in love, and in turn, give them a little bit of a break and more freedom. Definitely, one of the greatest Netflix comedies to see this weekend.

18. Trainwreck

This 2015 comedy movie never gets old. Follow single professional writer Amy (Amy Schumer) who fears commitment until she meets a dreamy sports doctor, who she is covering a story on. Amy ends up finding herself falling in love for the first time, and starts to panic. Indeed, one of the most unmissable Netflix comedies.
