Because nothing beats a good picnic.
Excitingly, restrictions are starting to ease, and summer is rapidly approaching. Like me, you’ll probably have lots of picnics on your agenda. Luckily, we can socialise outside with up to ten people, which is enough people to dive into a delightful al fresco feast with. From pristine beaches, to lush grasslands and parks, there are hundreds of places for picnics in Auckland. Here are nine of our favourites, so you won’t have difficulty deciding.
Please remember to obey social distancing rules, and wear masks where possible.
1. North Head, Devonport
There are plenty of stunning spots around here, but the North Head Historic Reserve Trail is unbeatable. Just look the iconic views of the shores and Auckland city in that picture. The lush green hilltops are the perfect place to perch your blanket, enjoy a scrumptious picnic and a therapeutic ocean breeze. Excellent for those wanting some insta-worthy shots.
📍 Devonport, Auckland 0624, New Zealand
2. Mission Bay
For something a little closer to home, head to Mission Bay. It boasts a stunning waterfront beach area a few meters from a large grassland, with spectacular views of Rangitoto Island. Therefore, you can switch it up and head to the sand and take a splash in the sea if you get bored of grass. If you’re too fed up of making your own munch after endless lockdown, there’s plenty of eateries offering Level 3 takeaway in the area.
📍 Mission Bay, Auckland
Another iconic place for picnics in Auckland is this picturesque seaside village. Just 45 minutes drive from the city, you’ll catch the most magical sunset and sunrises, while watching surfing brave the waves. Opt for either a Piha Beach picnic or an alfresco feast on the grassy hilltops. A fantastic summer date idea, or spot to make memories with your mates. Be sure to bring your camera for this one.
📍 Piha, West Coast, Auckland
4. Point Chevalier
Expect the best of both worlds here, from the lush greenland of Coyle Park to Point Chevalier’s beach just a few steps away. Opt to unpack your picnic under the historic Pohutukawa trees, or on the beach where you can splash around in the ocean. Either way, it doesn’t get too crowded, so you can expect plenty of privacy. Certainly, the ideal day out we all need.
📍 Point Chevalier, Auckland 1022, New Zealand
5. Auckland Domain
A classic, well-known spot for a picnic, surrounding the iconic Auckland War Memorial Museum. With plenty of space, you can maintain social distancing and still have fun. Chill out amongst nature, and pack a D.I.Y cheeseboard that you can all dive into. Because nothing brings people more together than sharing. Likewise, the museum is an elegant backdrop for some instagrammable content.
📍 Parnell, Auckland 1010, New Zealand
6. Charcoal Bay, Beach Haven
Some say this stunning private beach is Auckland’s best kept secret. You’ll find it hidden off Rosecamp Road, facing Waitemata Harbour. If you like the beach, you’ll adore the crystal clear waters which is a fantastic spot for swim before digging into your delicious picnic. We recommend this one for a smaller, intimate gathering of people, or a couple looking for some privacy in seclusion.
📍 Birkdale, Auckland, New Zealand
Immerse yourself in the bushlands, farmland and three beaches that make up this recreational park. Surrounded by nature, history and wildlife, it’s the perfect spot to settle down with a picnic. Perch yourself on the clifftops or beaches offering unbelievable viewpoints. Either way, you’ll experience a magical day out, and an epic sunset for the enthusiasts. Additionally, there are free electric BBQs to use in the area, which will make your picnic setup a whole lot easier.
📍 1501 Whangaparaoa Road, Army Bay, Auckland 0930, New Zealand
Another stunning coastal spot for an awesome picnic. The site is huge so you won’t have to worry about bumping into maskless strangers, and you’ll be able to pick from an array of areas. Excitingly, they’ve got free BBQ sets on site, therefore you can cook up a storm for the gang yourself. Larger groups have the option to book in advance, so nobody gets left out.
📍 Beach Road, Long Bay, Auckland 0792, New Zealand
As one of New Zealand’s best known parks, we had to include this expansive urban oasis on our list. Pack your D.I.Y shared platters and beers, and don’t forget your raw meats because you can cook on the park’s BBQ sets. Indeed, an excellent place for picnics in Auckland centre.
📍 Green Lane West, Epsom, Auckland 1051, New Zealand
