Walking in a whale watching wonderland.
Here in the holy land of Auckland, we’re blessed with some beautiful wildlife. A heavy chunk of this also lies in the marine segment. Aucklanders are lucky enough to be able to gaze at some whales and dolphins pretty much all year round! So, here is our guide to some of the best spots near the city to do just that. [Don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it]… And hey, you’ll be sure to have a whale of a time [dammit].
1. Auckland Whale And Dolphin Safari
Let’s start with one that’s obvious, thanks to the name itself! Auckland Whale And Dolphin Safari guarantee visitors a fun, eco-friendly and interactive experience seeing the gorgeous animals up close and personal. It’s the only safari of its kind in the whole of New Zealand and shows off the impressive Hauraki Gulf which different species visit all-year-round.
For more information, visit the Auckland Whale And Dolphin Safari website.
2. Bay Of Islands
This one is a drive away, but completely worth it for a weekend trip with the family to catch some brilliant wildlife. You’re sure to catch some jumping dolphins and some orcas passing through the waters.
3. Phoenix Charters Fishing Trips
While this is primarily a fishing based trip, doesn’t mean you won’t catch some of the marvellous marine mammals out in the natural habitat. You might just catch a few whoppers along the way too, while gazing at the whales. Win-win!
For more information, visit the Phoenix Charters website.
4. Whakatane (Bay Of Plenty)
Another spot that’s a little way away, but is completely worth it for a stunning weekend trip. Whakatane offers plenty of cruises over to White Island, which offers popular diving spots. And, on your way, you may well be lucky enough to catch dolphins, orca whales, minke whales and pilot whales! They can also sometimes be glimpsed off in the distance from the shores. Plus, on White Island there’s the, ya know, small added bonus of getting to gawk at an active volcano.
