In 1917, the Original Dixieland Jass Band released the very first jazz record spreading the word of improvisation and swing. Since then the world has been gifted with many overpowering and deeply moving voices. Candlelight invites fans of the blues and all that jazz to attend a live music performance inspired by the women of jazz complete with countless candles and a skilled band.
“Day in day out”, jazz music and its smooth sounds win over the soulful and free-spirited. Candlelight Jazz: Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and more Jazz Greats
Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Natalie Cole—just a few of the female artists who have left lasting legacies. As well as experimenting with jazz elements, they explored a wide range of genres, as is the nature of being a jazz or at least jazz-related artist. Simone was also known as “The High Priestess of Soul”, and Peggy Lee as “The Queen of American Pop Music”.
And this May, thanks to a little sax, keys, bass, and rich vocals, some of the most enchanting jazz songs of all time are being reimagined inside the beautiful Saint Mary’s Church. Hear the likes of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Cheek to Cheek”, Etta James’ “At Last”, Peggy Lee’s “Fever”, and many more favourites.
Often connoting dark rooms, raspy vocals, revolution, and freedom, jazz is a musical force to be reckoned with. And Candlelight Jazz is here to reacquaint you with some true jazz legends. With two performances taking place on the day, you can choose a concert that suits your schedule. Doors open 45 minutes before the start time.
