Although Salvador Dalí was one of the 20th century’s greatest painters, the genius who gave us melting clocks, flying tigers being eaten, stilt-legged animals and a still life that appears to be in motion—he was also a multidisciplinary artist exploring varied fields like sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing and filmmaking. His life, not without controversy, was epic and it is coming to New Zealand in the form of a multi-disciplinary, immersive exhibition this year.
Inside Dalí combines cutting-edge technology, imagery, real objects and illusions, the experience gives visitors a chronological trip through the Catalan painter’s life in pictures, his flamboyant personality and his personal interests as well as trips into his fascinating works with insight and depth. But, that’s not all.
The immersive experience includes multiple rooms. One features the iconic Mae West Lips Sofa, which undoubtedly will present in selfies en masse on social media feeds, while another features interviews with the man himself.
Additionally, The Divine Comedy Room features the work of Dali created to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s Inferno and The Mirror Room is a 360-degree hypnotic adventure into Dali’s surrealist work, to name a few. Consequently, be mindful of your attire when you visit.
Another attraction feature is The Immersive Experience where a ‘Dalian’ immersion has been created through high-resolution imagery and a supporting soundtrack. Brought to us by Gala Salvador Dali Foundation and the Crossmedia Group, the exhibition comes to us direct from Florence and is the first showing anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
“When people go through this exhibition they will understand just how incredible he really is,” Frederico Dalgas Pandolfini of Italy’s C&T Crossmedia said.
Inside Dali opens in Auckland at Spark Arena on May 28 and will pack up on June 30 before moving south to The Air Force Museum in Christchurch on July 11.
