Huge news!
We’ve been clinging to some hope all year that the Trans-Tasman travel bubble would open this year. A heavy string of rumours suggested that borders between Australia and New Zealand were to open once Covid-19 cases were under control. Well, it seems that won’t happen in 2020, but it looks like it could finally land early next year. Some New Zealanders have been allowed to travel to Australia since October, but this development will see the bubble fully open up between the two nations.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed in a new announcement that a deal has been “agreed in principle” to open up the Trans-Tasman bubble in early 2021. This is pending confirmation from the Australian government and so long as there is “no significant changes in the circumstances of either country”.
Jacinda Ardern said: “It is our intention to name a date for the commencement of trans-Tasman quarantine free travel in the new year, once remaining details are locked down.”
While no exact date has been confirmed, it seems a holiday this summer could still be on the cards. More details are set to follow.
