1. North Head, Devonport
There are lots of stunning spots around here, but the North Head Historic Reserve Trail is unbeatable. Just look the iconic views of the shores and Auckland city in that picture. The lush green hilltops are the perfect place to perch your blanket, enjoy scrumptious picnics and a therapeutic ocean breeze in Auckland. Excellent for those wanting instagrammable shots.

2. Mission Bay
For something a little closer to home, head to Mission Bay. It boasts a stunning waterfront beach area a few meters from a large grassland. Plus, there’s spectacular views of Rangitoto Island. So, you can switch it up and head to the sand or take a splash in the sea when you get bored of grass.

3. Piha
As one of the greatest Auckland beaches, you know you’ll have a good time. Just 45 minutes’ drive from the city, catch magical sunset and sunrises, while watching surfing brave the waves. Also, it’s a fantastic date idea and place to make memories with your mates. Be sure to bring your camera for this one.

4. Point Chevalier
Expect the best of both worlds here, from the lush greenland of Coyle Park to Point Chevalier’s beach just a few steps away. Opt to unpack your picnic under the historic Pohutukawa trees, or on the beach where you can splash around in the ocean. Either way, it doesn’t get too crowded, so you can expect plenty of privacy. Certainly, the ideal day out we all need.

5. Auckland Domain
A classic, well-known spot for picnics in Auckland, surrounding the iconic Auckland War Memorial Museum. With plenty of space, you can maintain social distancing and still have fun. Chill out amongst nature and pack a D.I.Y cheeseboard to dive into. Because nothing brings people more together than sharing. Likewise, the museum is an elegant backdrop for some instagrammable content.

6. Charcoal Bay, Beach Haven
Some say this stunning private beach is Auckland’s best kept secret. You’ll find it hidden off Rosecamp Road, facing Waitemata Harbour. If you like the beach, you’ll adore the crystal-clear waters which is a perfect swim before digging into a delicious picnic. We recommend this one for a smaller, intimate gathering of people, or a couple looking for some privacy in seclusion.

7. Shakespear Regional Park
Immerse yourself in the bushlands, farmland and three beaches that make up this recreational park. Surrounded by nature, history and wildlife, it’s the perfect spot to settle down with a picnic. Perch yourself on the clifftops or beaches offering unbelievable viewpoints. Additionally, there are free electric BBQs to use in the area, which will make your picnic setup a whole lot easier.

8. Long Bay Regional Park
Another stunning coastal spot, with a huge space, for an awesome picnic. Excitingly, they’ve got free BBQ sets on site, therefore you can cook up a storm for the gang yourself. Larger groups have the option to book in advance, so nobody gets left out.

As one of New Zealand’s best-known parks, we had to include this expansive urban oasis on our list. Pack your D.I.Y shared platters and beers, and don’t forget your raw meats because you can cook on the park’s BBQ sets. Indeed, an excellent place for picnics in Auckland centre.
